CELEBRATE SUCCESS AND HOPE A Benefit Concert For The Brain Tumor Society Saturday, April 9 at 8pm Acclaimed Boston-area musicians Noel, Sam Hooper and JoJo David will inaugurate Noel’s Celebrate Success and Hope benefit concert series.
Noel With her otherworldly soprano voice and evocative lyrics over a surreal musical landscape, Noel takes pop music and transforms it into something fresh and nearly impossible to categorize. She grew up by the sea in a small Rhode Island fishing village, moved to Boston, and graduated summa cum laude from the Boston Conservatory of Music, having studied classical voice and piano. After singing with the Boston Pops, Tanglewood Festival Chorus, and John Oliver Chorale—including concerts in front of capacity crowds at Boston’s Symphony Hall—Noel developed an intense drive to create her own music and sound. She wrote and recorded many lyrically lush, and emotionally moving songs with Boston producer John Weston of Futura Productions—music that captured the ears of LA-based producers Christian B and Marc Dold of SAF Music, who have produced radio hits and remixes for many premiere recording artists such as Enya, Celine Dion, Norah Jones, Sarah Brightman, and others. Noel's voice has also inspired film composer Brian Tyler, who has featured her vocals in The Fourth Floor (starring William Hurt), Jane Doe (starring Teri Hatcher), The Big Empty (Kelsey Grammer), and the Children of Dune mini-series. She is also a featured artist on Get Ya Self Up! (Yellow Rose Music, 2004), a compilation CD benefiting breast cancer awareness. The Regent event will present a rare opportunity to see and hear Noel perform her original material on stage as a leader. About the concert, Noel says, “Like many of us I recently lost a close friend to a disease that the doctors didn't fully understand and couldn't cure. In order to do whatever I can to help, I've launched the Celebrate Success and Hope concert series. We have gathered some great musicians and put together a very special event to raise money for research in finding a cure. There is tremendous hope for the future, and with small contributions like mine and yours, I know that we will succeed." (Noel is producing a limited run of signed and numbered CDs—available that night—which include songs featured during the benefit performance.) To hear Noel's music now, click here:
Sam Hooper "…Sam Hooper Group, a Boston based blues band that raises the sonic standard in the city." – Alex Kauffmann, Shanghai Daily Sam Hooper is a dynamic musician on the Boston music scene who has thrilled audiences in the People’s Republic of China, Switzerland, and Japan. An alumnus of Berklee College of Music and The University of Miami School of Music, Hooper has had his songs published by New York’s Heavy Hitters Music and The University of Miami’s Category 5 Publishing. As an artist, he stirs up an alluring blend of blues/rock, pop and funk. His soulful vocals have been compared to Otis Redding and Robert Cray, while critics have likened his blistering guitar playing to Jimi Hendrix and Carlos Santana. In 2004, Sam Hooper Group completed an exciting four-month tour of Shanghai and Beijing, China and Okinawa, Japan. The highlight of the trip was the Shanghai recording and release of their new EP, East. With Jordan Scannella on bass and Akira Nakamura on drums, it documents the trio’s transformation after playing six nights a week for three months at Shanghai’s famous House of Blues & Jazz. The Group consistently drew the largest crowds the club had ever seen, and the fans showed their enthusiasm by jamming the dance floor, singing along, and buying CDs! A new full-length CD, including the songs on East, is scheduled for 2005 release in Boston. Comfortable in a solo/acoustic setting or grabbing his electric guitar to lead a band, Hooper has showcased at Boston’s NEMO, Nashville’s 2NMC, and Philadelphia’s PMC music conferences, and The New England Songwriters Festival. For three years running, he’s been a featured performer at The Frank Brown International Songwriters Festival in Florida. Hooper has released two critically acclaimed CDs in the USA, the infectious All Caught Up, and the collaboration Rich Glenn & Sam Hooper. The funky blues of "I Won’t Be Your Fool," and the hopeful ballad, "Help Me Out of the Dark," from All Caught Up, have been heard by millions of viewers on the hot daytime TV dramas All My Children and The Young & The Restless. In 2004, "Leaving Me Too," his melancholy account of the pain of loss, was selected for the compilation CD, Boston’s Best Singer/Songwriter Showcase.Performing as a finalist in the 2002 18th Annual Boston Battle of the Blues Bands led to a highly–coveted Local Artist Spotlight feature on the popular Boston radio program Blues on Sunday with Holly Harris on WBOS 92.9FM. More recently, Sam Hooper Group has opened packed shows for two blues guitar legends: Ronnie Earl and (former Muddy Waters sideman) Luther "Guitar Jr." Johnson. The first full-length Sam Hooper Group CD, East 2 East, will be released in May. It was recorded in Shanghai, Boston and LA. Steve Morse of the Boston Globe calls Hooper "a fiery player, clearly influenced by Jimi Hendrix and Living Colour's Vernon Reid." Website: http://samhooper.com/
